About the Neighborhood Homework Club
The Neighborhood Homework Club (NHC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of resources that support and promote the academic and civic development of children in grades K through 6. NHC does this by developing structured programs that help parents support their teachers to work within the curriculum at their schools.
The program's objective is to promote good study habits and positive school behavior. We strive to create an environment where positive mentoring is encouraged and we focus to develop constructive civic projects that enrich the intellectual development of children.
Central to our long term success is the development and expansion of grass roots neighborhood homework clubs where children, their parents, their peers and teachers can come together each week to complete homework assignments, develop extracurricular assignment, such as science fair projects, and to carry out projects that enrich our schools and our communities.
Schoolhouse Rocks Homework Club is the first NHC project. Started in 2005, it is located in the Jeremy Ranch subdivision of Park City, Utah. The club has grown to 21 students grades K through 6.
Our business purpose is to:
- Continue to expand our pilot NHC program within the Park City School District.
- Complete development of a structured homework program that can be distributed by schools to other interested parents.
- Train interested parents and help them start their own NHC's.
- Apply for sponsorship and grants that will allow us to help expand extracurricular activities of all affiliated NHC's.
This year the NHC will work with our pilot program and with the Jeremy Ranch Elementary School to complete the development of a structured homework program based on our experience that can be deployed and adopted throughout Utah. We will use the success of our own program to demonstrate the clear value of the NHC approach and to test curriculum and development programs as they are developed.
NHC is a non-profit governed by a Board of Trustees. The current Chair of the Board of Trustees is Kristen Robinson who an active member of the Park City Education Foundation and a substitute teacher for the Park City School District.
Kristen is supported by trustee board members Eric Janes, Vice Principal and teacher at the Park City Winter School (a private school that supports development of student athletes that are in Park City's Winter Olympics Program); Stacy Swain who is active in the Park City Education Foundation, the PTO and other school programs at Jeremy Ranch Elementary; and Kathy Anderson, the Reading Specialist at the Jeremy Ranch Elementary School.
